How to Choose the Right Rug Size

One of the most common mistakes when buying a rug online is choosing one that is too small. A rug that floats in the middle of a room without connecting to the furniture makes the space feel unanchored and unfinished. This guide helps you get it right the first time.

Before you order: mark out the rug dimensions on your floor with masking tape. It takes three minutes and removes all uncertainty.

Living Room

Front legs on the rug. The front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on the rug, back legs off. The rug should extend at least 20 cm beyond each side of the sofa. This is the most common and versatile arrangement.

All legs on the rug. Every furniture leg sits on the rug. Works in larger rooms and creates a more enclosed feel. Allow at least 30-45 cm around the full arrangement on all sides.

For a standard 3-seater sofa: our 214 x 152 cm and 240 x 155 cm sizes work well. For L-shaped sofas or open-plan spaces: 240 x 170 cm or 244 x 152 cm.

Avoid: a rug where only the coffee table sits on it and all sofa legs float off the edge.

Dining Room

Add at least 60 cm on each side of your dining table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

Table seating 4-6 people: 214 x 152 cm or 240 x 155 cm. Table seating 8: 240 x 170 cm or 244 x 152 cm.

Bedroom

For a double or queen bed: place a 180 x 120 cm rug lengthways alongside or at the foot, extending 60-80 cm beyond the bed.

For a king bed: use a 214 x 152 cm or 240 x 155 cm rug under the bed, extending 60 cm on each side and at the foot.

Hallway Runners

Our 180 x 60 cm runners suit most standard hallways. Leave 5-10 cm of bare floor on each side. For longer hallways, place two runners end-to-end with a small gap.
