What Size Rug Do I Need? A Room-by-Room Guide for European Homes

The most common rug mistake is not colour or pattern — it is buying a rug that is too small. A too-small rug makes furniture look like it is floating; the right size anchors the room. Here is the simple formula, room by room.

Living room: connect the furniture

The rule European stylists swear by: the front legs of your sofa and armchairs should sit on the rug. This visually ties the seating area together and makes the room feel larger, not smaller.

  • For a typical Berlin or Paris apartment living room with a three-seater sofa, 214 × 152 cm anchors the front legs comfortably.
  • For larger or open-plan rooms, go up to 240 × 170 cm or 244 × 152 cm — in an open-plan space, the rug is what defines the “room within the room.”

Bedroom: warmth where your feet land

Two approaches work:

  • Beside the bed: a 180 × 120 cm rug along one side gives you that first warm step every morning — the affordable, flexible option.
  • Under the bed: place a larger rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending about 50–60 cm on each side.

Wool is particularly good in bedrooms — it insulates against cold floors and softens sound. See our bedroom rugs.

Dining room: chairs stay on the rug

Pull a chair back from the table — it should still be fully on the rug. That means your rug needs to extend roughly 60 cm beyond the table edge on every side. For a four-to-six-seat table, 240 × 155 cm or larger works well. Flat-woven rugs (kilims and dhurries) are ideal here: chairs slide easily and crumbs vacuum out without fuss. Hallway: the path through your home

A runner should leave 5–10 cm of floor visible on each side. Our 180 × 60 cm runners suit most European hallways and entryways.

Two final tips

Measure with tape on the floor. Mark the rug's dimensions with masking tape before you buy — thirty seconds that prevents an expensive guess.

Note on measurements: all Dariyaa rugs are measured core-to-core; tassels are not included, so the coverage you calculate is the coverage you get.
